Sabbatical- Foreword

Foreword

Tēnā koutou katoa (Greetings to all)

Ko te take o tenei kaupapa i whakaūkia i runga i ngā wawata kia tū tangata te ākonga, kiatupu hei ākonga mātau, hei ākonga pakari, hei ākonga whakawhitiwhiti kōrero i roto i te ao hurihuri, e whai oranga ai tōna hinengaro, tōna tinana, tōna wairua, me tōna pūmau hoki ki tōna tuakiri, ki tōna tūrangawaewae.

(Translation: The purpose of this proposal is founded on the aspiration to develop successful learners, who will grow as competent and confident learners, effective communicators in the changing world, healthy of mind, body and soul and secure in their identity, and sense of belonging.)

My new intention:

The Mairehau High School Board continues to be supportive of my sabbatical leave. At our 28 May Board meeting, the Board advised that they would support a refocus of my original sabbatical plan.

I no longer wish to travel overseas because of the current worldwide COVID-19 Pandemic. The professional learning I intend to conduct during my sabbatical comprises of visiting other Secondary schools, research study, and refreshment

  1. I will take the advice of our Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, and travel the roads of Aotearoa. I plan to take a three to four-week road tour of Aotearoa via campervan to visit North and South Island Schools.

  2. To complete a study towards a Google Level 2 training Certificate.

Kei nga tauira o te kura tuarua o Mairehau, ngā pūkenga, ngā mōhiotanga hoki e whai wāhi atu ai ia ki te hāpai i te ao whānui.  (Translation: Students of Mairehau High School will have the skills and knowledge to participate in and contribute to society and the wider world.)

Mairehau High School is a smaller community co-educational high school serving north east Christchurch. It provides a full academic programme, additional specialist support for students with learning needs and for physically disabled students, and opportunities for students to participate in a range of sporting, cultural & service activities. The school’s philosophy emphasises teaching students how to learn and to relate to others. The school encourages students to be independent, life-long learners, to respect others, and to always reach their potential.

Clear expectations of student behaviour are embodied in ‘The Mairehau Way’, the school’s values system which enhances the partnership between learning and well-being. A coherent system of expectations and support structures underlines the choices and consequences ethos which keeps all students safe, focused and productive during their school day.

Teachers are expected to continually examine their professional practice, and to add new teaching techniques and strategies to their knowledge, in order to meet the learning needs of all students. This is supported by a comprehensive in-house teacher professional development programme which places students at the centre of the school’s efforts.

The school is a co-education high school established in 1961 to serve the north east sector of Christchurch. The school’s name, Mairehau, is that of the district named for the daughter of Marshland’s landowner and benefactor, Arthur Gravenor Rhodes.

Mairehau is a shrub prized for the fragrance of its flowers, the fragrance of the  mist maiden.

The motto, ‘Mairetia i te matauranga’ means ‘be fragrant with wisdom’.

The crest outline is a symbolic canoe prow denoting hallowed ground. In its upper part is a symbolic Mairehau flower and the mere of leadership below it. The scrolls symbolise a continuing heritage and the white line the living soul of people. The school colours are red, white, and black as these were the only colours available to  craftsmen.

Significant features of Mairehau High School are:

A culture of innovation based on collaboration and mutual support among staff

Re: Principal’s update message “Play it Safe during Alert Level 2.”

I wish to acknowledge students, staff, and parents for our first week on site. Schools are designed to hum with the vibrancy of young people, and it has been a significant week for reconnecting and re-engaging as we begin to determine the learning journey ahead for each of our students.

Students and teachers alike are happy to be back. The face-to-face student to teacher contact is still the best form of learning experience for our learners. This week we focussed on wellbeing and re-connection; next week we will focus on Teaching and Learning.

School Attendance:

Under Alert Level 2, we advise any students and staff to stay at home if they are sick.  If there is a concern about your respiratory health on-site; we will contact home following a brief health assessment by our school nurse; you will be sent home.

Our average school attendance rate for this week is 87%. (Compared to the national attendance rate of around 80%.)

Student Absences:

Many thanks to all those parents/caregivers who took time to contact the school to explain a student’s absence.  This is appreciated as it saves us time in following up on unexplained absences.   Contact with the school could be; a message via the school app, an email to the school office (admin@mairehau.schol.nz)  or a phone call and leaving a message on the absence extension (press 1).   A text to parents/caregivers, sent from us during the day, is a friendly reminder that every student absence needs to be explained.  We CARE.

Frequently asked Questions (FAQ):

Thank you to the many parents that sent questions to us regarding our return to Mairehau High School. An FAQ page has been placed on our school website to respond to all of your queries. If you have other questions, send them in, and we will update the FAQ page.

New Public Health Response Order – accurate information:

The COVID-19 Public Health Response (Alert level 2) Order 2020 came into effect at 12.01am on 14 May. The purpose of the order is “to prevent, and limit the risk of, the outbreak, or spread of COVID-19 by putting in place obligations concerning,  businesses, services, and gatherings”.

Schools and early learning services are excluded from the requirements of the Level 2 Order apart from having to have appropriate contact tracing, physical distancing (breathing space), and hygiene measures in place (see the MOE  health and safety guidance for details).

The Act that enables the order can be found here: http://www.legislation.govt.nz/act/public/2020/0012/latest/whole.html.

Visitors:

During Alert Level 2, we are discouraging visitors to our school, including parents. We wish to minimise the risk of spreading COVID-19. We would prefer you to contact us by phone (385 3145 or send an email (admin@mairehau.school.nz).

Contact tracing of any visitors to school is in place. You can sign in/out at our main office or use the School App.

School App:

Our School APP will provide you with school information and contact tracing registration.  SCHOOL APP:  COVID-19 check-in module. The app is also very useful for receiving alerts, checking attendance, sending in an absence note if your child is sick, checking term dates, weekly reports and academic progress. It can be downloaded from Google Play or the App Store by searching ‘School Apps NZ’.

Closing:

During these most difficult times, as our region and nation face the challenge of the worldwide pandemic, I take this opportunity to wish you and whanau all the very best.

Stay safe, keep well, and be kind to others.

Te Hokianga: Our Return to Mairehau High School

13 May 2020

Kia ora,

RE: Principal’s update message "Te Hokianga (The Return)”

Our Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, announced earlier this week that New Zealand would be moving into Alert Level 2 from tomorrow. Mairehau High School staff can enter the school site from Thursday  14 May 2020 to prepare for a return to school.

Return to School:

Teachers and support staff are looking forward to all students returning to onsite learning from Monday 18th May 2020. The focus for next week will be about wellbeing and re-connection.

School Timetable: ALL Students may return

Monday 18 May

Period 1:  Students are to go to their normal form class.

Periods 2- 4:  Normal classes

Lunchtime: Students may go home or remain at school for Period 5.

Period 5: A learning centre will operate for all students that remain at school. The purpose of the Learning Centre is to help students to catch up on work missed during the COVID- 19 lockdowns. All students are welcome.

Tuesday 19 May:

Period 1- 4: Normal classes

Lunchtime: Students may go home or remain at school for Period 5.

Period 5: A Learning centre will operate for all students that remain at school. The purpose of the Learning Centre is to help students to catch up on work missed during the COVID- 19 lockdowns.

Wednesday 20 May:

Regular classes will resume.

Health and Safety Planning: The Senior Leadership Team is planning our Alert Level 2 "Return to School". Our Alert Level 2 Safety Plan will be posted on our school website and is currently in development.

The Prime Minister alert level 2 announcement, has signalled that schools are safe and open for everyone. We will focus on welcoming our students, staff and families back to school. A moment we have all been waiting for since we went into isolation.

Hygiene Practices:

We will, of course, continue with excellent hygiene practices, and encourage everyone to continue to respect public health advice, including that which is specific to schools. The link in the bulletin to the Public Health Requirements for Early Learning Services and Schools at Alert Level 2 is particularly useful in this regard. If you haven"t already accessed it, I recommend that you do.

Physical distancing is an excellent precaution to prevent the spread of disease. We do, however, know it is challenging in schools, so good hygiene practices and regular cleaning are even more critical here. Staff and students should cough into their elbows, handwashing and drying and routine cleaning of commonly touched surfaces. While there is more freedom in Alert Level 2, with a one-metre social distancing requirement, we may need to restructure the size limit of our classes.

If you are sick, you will be sent home: Under Alert Level 2, we advise any students and staff to stay at home if they are sick, and we will send anyone home immediately if they show any symptoms.

Safe practices: Our school has safe and sensible practices to maintain the health and safety of everyone on the school site. As described by Dr Payinda in his NZ Herald article, "COVID’s not measles or chickenpox, it doesn’t hang in the air for hours waiting to infect passers-by. It travels on invisible drops of spit. You don"t have to cross the street to avoid anyone. Just avoid getting in their "moist breath" zone". We all just need to remember to have some breathing space at Alert Level 2!

It"s essential, however, that not just at school but at home, safe hygiene habits are practised by everyone, as this is essential to minimise the risk that someone gets infected with Covid-19.

For more information about the public health measures at Alert Level 2, you can visit the covid19.govt.nz website: https://covid19.govt.nz/

Visitors to School:

During Alert Level 2, we are discouraging visitors to our school, including parents. We wish to minimise the risk of spreading COVID-19. We would prefer you to contact us by phone or send an email.

Chromebooks/ Devices:

Mairehau High School and the Ministry of Education have issued devices to many students. These devices need to be returned to school.

Water Bottles/ Drinking fountains:

We are discouraging the use of water fountains and would prefer that individuals bring and use their own water bottles. There should be no sharing of bottles or other touch items which go close to the mouth/nose eg phones.

Re-connect:

It will be a time to re-connect and regroup, in support of our wider communities, and especially our senior students. We will all be busy developing creative and responsive approaches to ensure students’ wellbeing at the forefront as we navigate appropriate learning and assessment support.

I take this opportunity to wish you all the very best.

Stay safe, keep well, and use kind words to others.

Alert Level 2 Message to the Mairehau High School Community

9 May 2020

Kia ora koutou,

Re: Mairehau High School Principal's Update, Alert Level 2,

More students will be returning to school when the nation moves to Alert Level 2.

The Prime Minister's announcement was greeted with a sigh of relief and a sense of anticipation across the Education Sector. Teachers love nothing more than playing their role to connect with students face to face. There is a hive of activity underway to get Mairehau High School prepared for Alert Level 2. Students and teachers alike are looking forward to returning to school.

Health and Safety Planning:
The Senior Leadership Team is planning our Alert Level 2 "Return to School".  Our Alert Level 2 Safety Plan will be posted on our school website and is currently in development.

The messaging is clear. When the Prime Minister announces a move to alert level 2, it will signal that schools are safe and open for everyone. Alert Level 2, update message to Staff

8 May 2020

Kia ora koutou,

Re: Alert Level 2, update message from the Principal

Prime Minister’s announcement:
The details announced yesterday by the Prime Minister (and the Secretary for Education in the bulletin) about de-escalating to alert level 2, was based on the latest public health advice.

The way forward, over the coming week or so, sees us in quite a different position to that which we all experienced when moving to alert level 2.

MOE bulletin:
Yesterday afternoon’s bulletin was clear and comprehensive. The Secretary for Education covered off the significant points causing most of the concern and debate about next steps. The timeliness of her bulletin was also helpful and enables us all to plan well, and ensure that as soon as we are aware of the alert level 2 timeframes that we will be ready to serve our communities as best, we possibly can.

H&S Planning:
The Senior Leadership Team is planning our Alert Level 2 “Return to School”.

The Alert Level 2 Safety Plan will be posted on our school website. Our Deputy Principal has scheduled a staff meeting to discuss the draft plan.

The messaging is clear. When the Prime Minister announces a move to alert level 2, it will signal that schools are safe and open for everyone. The way forward will include focusing on welcoming our students, staff and families back to school. A moment we have all been longing for since we locked our doors in March.

Re-connect
It will be a time to re-connect and regroup, in support of our wider communities, and especially our senior students. We will all be busy developing creative and responsive approaches to ensure students’ wellbeing is at the forefront as we navigate appropriate learning and assessment support.

Siobhan (DP) has created a team of ‘CARE groups’, which is an opportunity for staff just to connect and touch base. Sarah is compiling a staff survey.

I trust that you and whānau are safe and well.

Enjoy your weekend.

COVID-19 Safety Plan- Alert Level 3

I want to share our Alert Level 3 Worksafe Safety Plan.

COVID-19 Safety Plan Team: Harry Romana (Principal), John Pearson (Board), Amy Honey (PPTA), Sandra Meharg (NZEI).

Background
At the time of writing this document; children (under 15) were considered less infectious and less at risk from infection than adults, older people with comorbidities (particularly cardiac) were most at risk of dying, many infected people were asymptomatic and new sequelae from infection were being discovered across all age and risk groups.  COVID-19 was known to spread in the air and to remain viable for hours on surfaces and to be effectively neutralised by soap and water. There were active clusters of infection, deaths in elderly cases and a reducing number of new cases (<10) each day.  Hence our safety plan is based on the virus not being contained, hence the need to minimise the risk of COVID19 being passed between any persons, staff, students or other at our site and assumes that infected people may not show any signs or know they are infected themselves. Anything not covered specifically will be guided by these principles

Alert Level 3 Actions.
What will be done to manage risks from restarting our school after lock-down?
21- 28 April- Mairehau High School is preparing our school site. Only contractors and service people are allowed on the site. The work includes site preparation, lawns, gardens,  cleaning, maintenance, floorplans and the logistical management of health and safety requirements.

Deep Clean:
Our Board has approved the use of a professional cleaning contractor (GenieClean)  to provide a deep clean of our school. “The Ministry of Education (MOE) advises there are no specific requirements for cleaning regarding COVID-19.”  However, we are doing it anyway. The contractor’s team will sanitise all classrooms, rooms, hall and gym, kitchens, workspaces, and toilets. By 28 April, the deep clean will be completed.

Only essential teaching and support staff will be allowed to enter our premises during Alert Level 3. Entry will be limited to performing essential tasks and time onsite minimised.  Staff who have to be onsite at the same time will be assigned to bubbles of at most 10.

All people entering the site will be registered to allow tracing and follow strict hygiene requirements including mandatory hand washing on entry and social distancing (2m outside, 1m inside) rules.

All gatherings of staff will be strictly limited and confined to within work bubbles. Staff will be assigned to a work bubble. Most staff should be in the ‘other bubble’ which does not access the site. Staff will only mix inside their staff bubbles, whenever possible staff bubbles do not overlap in the same building at the same time.

A Mairehau HS Alert Level response letter was sent to our community and staff to advise there will be no students or staff on our school site. Letter Link

All of our staff will be working from home, and students are learning from home.  All teaching and learning will be through our school online environment.
How will we ensure all teaching and support staff know how to keep themselves safe from exposure to COVID-19?
The school will regularly communicate to staff the recommendations and guidelines of the Ministry of Health (MOH). The school will implement the MOH hygiene and distance protocols.

Hand sanitisers will be available to students and staff. An effective preventative strategy is to strictly limit bubbles to one bubble of 10 per room, cleaning high contact/ shared surfaces twice each day, and keeping the room warm and ventilated.

Whenever practically possible leaving a gap between the teachers and students for as much of the classroom time as possible.

The following posters will be available to our staff and community and will be displayed at a range of venues: school site, website, email to staff and community.

How will you gather information on the wellbeing of our staff to ensure that they are safe to work?
The Guidance network team will survey students and staff about their wellbeing.

The Guidance Counsellor, Deans, and form teachers will contact and provide support to students and whānau to provide wellbeing support.

Ka piki te ora:
A Mairehau High School wellbeing site (ka piki te ora) is publically available on our school website to support the wellbeing of all students and staff.

When necessary the school will contact external services such as the Police, Youth Services, or Te Oranga Tamariki to connect with our most at-risk students and families.  All contact with external agencies will be managed and approved by the principal.
How will Mairehau High School operate in a way that keeps staff and others safe from exposure to COVID-19?
There is an expectation for all Mairehau High School staff to inform the school of their physical and mental wellbeing.
The following poster is relevant for all who enter the school site:  Stop are you safe? Link

Instead of coming into Mairehau HS (refer to poster), you could:

  • Ring the school office to ask for advice: Ph 385 3145 or send an email to admin@mairehau.school.nz
  • Essential services must contact our school Caretaker for entry: 021 957355
  • During alert Level 3, the school will not have any students or teachers onsite. All learning will be Online.
  • For more information, please visit our school website at https://www.mairehau.school.nz/
How will Mairehau High School manage an exposure or suspected exposure to COVID-19
The school will organise safe transport home immediately and provide all workers with advice on contacting GP and/or Healthline.
Healthline: 0800 358 5453

If Mairehau High School is connected to a confirmed or probable case of COVID- 19 the school will close on an individual or group basis for 72 hours to allow contact tracing and cleaning, and then potentially for a further 14 days. The school will advise the MOH and MOE for advice and guidance to support next steps.
How will Mairehau High School evaluate whether your work processes or risk controls are effective?
The school will regularly gather staff information on the effectiveness of our COVID- 19 procedures. The data will be collated, evaluated, and analysed. A report will be available to the staff and Board.
How do these changes impact on the risks of the work that you do?
The purpose of our COVID-19 safety plan is to minimise the risk of COVID-19 in the school.

There will be strategic and operational impacts on the day to day running of our school, for e.g

  • The COVID- 19 Health and safety risk to students, staff, and community will be minimised.
  • Teaching and Learning will be Online
  • The school structure of the day will change
  • Teaching and Learning from home is schoolwide is new for all
  • Student attendance risks
  • Student engagement risks
  • Student achievement risks
  • Personnel risks
  • Whānau and community risks

Senior staff will compile a practice guide at each alert level. The guide will record a list of staff questions and responses  aligned to:
